Integrated Myofascial Therapy in Bristol

Integrated, Myofascial Therapy is a soft tissue rehabilitation therapy that aims to release restricted fascia within the body. Restoring the fascia back to its truest form can create a positive impact both physically and mentally. Consequently, the release can be quite profound.

“We have to accept the fact that each part of the body is responsible for supporting and creating integrity to all of it’s counterparts; no one part lives in isolation (tensengrity).”

- Ruth Duncan, Myofascial Release UK

What is fascia?

Fascia is a weblike, three dimensional matrix that supports every other structure in the human body. It is a single, continuous sheet of tissue that surrounds, protects and makes up the shape on the body itself. The three main elements of fascia are collagen, elastic and ground substance.

How does myofascial release work?

The fascia is melted back into its free-flowing form via hands-on techniques on the skin (not through clothing). These can be subtle and gentle or deep and penetrating.

  1. MFR works on the entire fascial network

  2. Finds the pain and look elsewhere for the cause

  3. Has a key time element to enable the fascia to yield

  4. Is not protocol, each session offers a unique treatment

  5. Encourage clients to allow their body and mind to often to help promote interception (inner awareness)

  6. Engages the client during treatment to enhance responses

  7. Uses dynamic, spontaneous movement approaches

  8. Aims to reorganise physical and emotional holding patterns

Why might fascia be restricted?

  1. Injury or trauma (physical or emotional)

  2. Inflammatory responses

  3. Habitually poor posture

Fascia is a tensional force transmission system and adapts to the demands placed upon it. When injured, the restrictions can create dysfunction along the lines of where tension has been placed, creating an array of symptoms that can be distant to the site of original injury.

Restrictions in the fascia can occur at any point in our lives. The fascial web has stored memory and we can hold restrictions in the body for a long time.
